Greyfish Masters Swimming Program

Masters swimming is a fitness program that develops your power and endurance as an adult swimmer. Three or four times a week we swim structured workouts designed to fit an individual’s goals and ability. Instruction and training in any of the four competitive strokes is offered (freestyle, backstroke, butterfly, breaststroke). The program is available to anyone over 18 years old with a keen desire to improve their swimming skills and fitness level. This is not a learn-to-swim program, and new participants should be already able to swim two lengths of the 25-meter pool. Prospective swimmers are welcome to try out for a week at no charge.

To improve, one should plan on swimming at least 2 or 3 times a week. In addition to the four scheduled practices, swimmers in the Masters program have access to the fitness room. A separate orientation course is required for those who wish to use the fitness room.

Our practice times are:
Monday, 5:30pm to 6:50pm
Wednesday, 5:30pm to 6:50pm, Saturday 7:15am to 8:50am.
and there is Friday public lane swim 7:30am to 8:50am, which some of us use as well.
Our Greyfish membership allows us to use the pool during any public swim without additional cost.

For those with the competitive itch, masters swim meets are run by other aquatic centres throughout the year. At these meets, events are seeded by time, and results are divided into five-year age groups. The Greyfish Masters program is an excellent way to prepare for such masters competitions, and for triathlons.

There is also plenty of scope for the more social swimmer. Greyfish Masters enjoy several social events throughout the year – river swims, barbecues, potluck dinners, and breakfast after the Friday and Saturday 'Early Bird' swims.

For information about the time schedule and fees please call the Nick Smith Centre at 613-623-7301.
To learn more about the workout structure please e-mail the Greyfish Swim Coach, Eric Thomson.

We are a very social group and have quite a few events during the year when we can all get together to do things besides swimming. Many of our members are involved in other sports activities such as cycling and running.

There is a regular open-water swim during the summer months, in the Madawaska River. Contact us for more information on meeting times and locations.

Regular summer events
Our summer events include several pot-lucks and bbqs, as well as at least one long-distance swim per season, as well as the occasional bike tour. Our long swims in the past have included the distance along the Madawaska River from Stewartville to the end of Flat Rapids Road, and the mighty Ottawa River from Norway Bay in Quebec to Sand Point in Ontario.
In 2006 we biked along the K&P trail from Renfrew to Calabogie. In the summer of 2007 a group of us biked from Calabogie to Flower Station and back, 32k! There were also members, friends and spouses, and people who just didn't feel like biking, simultaneously running and hiking the trail, so there was fun for everyone. We're hoping to make the bike tour a yearly event along with the long swim.
